What is Human in the Loop?

Human in the Loop: an AI term, explained in plain English.

In one line

An AI set-up where a person checks or approves the AI’s work at the important steps, so it never makes big decisions alone.

In simple words

When you learn to ride a bike, a grown-up walks beside you and grabs the seat before you fall. The bike still moves on its own, but someone is there at the risky moments.

Human in the loop means an AI does the work, and a person checks or approves the important steps.

The technical side

Human in the loop (HITL) is a design in which a person reviews, corrects or approves an AI system’s output at set points, such as before an AI agent sends money, deletes data or publishes text. It trades speed for safety and accountability.

On 1 November 2026 the South China Morning Post reported a paper from DeepSeek’s Harness team arguing that one person can supervise only three to five active agent sessions at once, and proposing to spread coding tasks among agents so that people review only the results. For payments, banks moved the other way: JPMorgan and Citigroup curbed AI agents that move customer money. More on our AI news feed.
