What stablecoin supply is and how to read it

Definition as of 29 Sep 2026.

A stablecoin is a crypto token designed to hold a steady value, usually one US dollar. Its market cap is its price multiplied by the supply in circulation, so for a dollar stablecoin the market cap is close to the number of tokens issued. The price column is in US dollars; a stablecoin tied to another currency or asset is not expected to trade near $1.

How to read it. Growing supply means more of the token has been issued; falling supply means it has been redeemed. Supply is one of the inputs people use to gauge how much cash-like money is sitting in crypto markets. It is not a forecast of prices, and a price well away from its peg is a warning about that coin only.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this data come from?

CoinGecko’s list of coins in its Stablecoins category, ranked by market cap. It is kept for about ten minutes, so the time above is when we last fetched it.

Why is the total not the whole stablecoin market?

It adds up only the coins in the table. Smaller stablecoins are not listed, so the real total is larger.

Is the price the price I can trade at?

No. It is a reference price that may be delayed, and never an execution price.

Not investment advice: this is a reading of supply, not a recommendation. See the risk disclaimer.
