Coinbase has published a rare breakdown of which AI chatbots its customers use to trade, and Elon Musk's Grok came out far ahead. According to Bitcoin.com News, the exchange's developer account shared a chart titled "Where agentic traders come from", splitting notional trading volume by the large language model client that sent each order between 14 and 21 September. Grok took 59.5% of that agent trading volume, while ChatGPT managed just 1.5%.

The gap between the two is close to forty times. Claude, the other launch partner for the product, recorded 13.4% of agent volume. Custom command-line interface setups accounted for 21.73%, making them the second largest source of orders in the period. Coinbase chief executive Brian Armstrong summed up the result in a single line, saying Grok is currently the leading client for agentic traders on the exchange.

Coinbase for Agents went live on 11 June, with ChatGPT and Claude named as the launch partners. The product lets a user authorise an AI assistant to trade spot crypto and derivatives, read market data and pay for services inside an isolated portfolio, subject to spending caps and trade limits. Three months on, the two launch partners together account for under 15% of agent volume, and the better known consumer chatbot holds less than a sixtieth of it.

Grok leads agent volume

Bitcoin.com News notes that Coinbase did not break down the reasons for the gap, though a few explanations are plausible. Grok sits inside X, where many crypto traders already spend their time, shortening the step from reading a market thread to asking an agent to act. The chart also measures dollar volume rather than user numbers, so a small number of large Grok-driven traders could have skewed the split.

In the same week, Coinbase extended agent trading to US stocks and exchange-traded funds. The expansion covers thousands of listed names, 24/5 trading, fractional shares from $1 and zero commissions through Coinbase Capital Markets Corp. Setup can take as few as three clicks from Perplexity, Grok, ChatGPT or Claude. Agents pay for themselves through x402, Coinbase's micropayment protocol, which the company says has processed more than 230 million transactions worth over $54 million.

Grok's lead also coincided with X starting to pay people who build bots on its platform. Tesla investor Sawyer Merritt posted an email about Grok Bot Creator Rewards, a pilot that pays creators every two weeks based on how many people use their bots and how often. He said he had earned $500 in the first two weeks. To qualify, creators must post about their public bots on X at least twice per pay period and have X Money set up, with payouts running through X's Original Content Rewards.

Launch partners fall behind

Separate details shared on X describe the scheme as an invite-only US pilot where usage and repeat usage count, while likes and impressions do not. The figures matter because they offer an unusual public look at which AI assistants are actually placing trades, at a time when exchanges are competing to attract automated order flow.
