The technical side
Chat APIs accept a separate system message that the model is trained to treat as higher priority than the user’s messages. Apps use it to set the assistant’s persona, the tools it may use, safety rules and output format.
System prompts are not secret by design: users can sometimes trick a model into revealing them, and malicious text can try to override them (prompt injection).
