What is Mixture of Experts?
Mixture of Experts: an AI term, explained in plain English.
An AI model built from many smaller "expert" parts, where only a few experts work on each word, so a huge model runs faster and cheaper.

In simple words
Think of a big school with 100 teachers. When you bring a maths question, the front desk sends you to two maths teachers, not to all 100. The school knows a lot, but only a few teachers work on each question. A mixture-of-experts AI works the same way: a small "router" picks a few experts for each word.
The technical side
In a mixture-of-experts (MoE) model, some layers of a transformer hold many expert networks. A router sends each token to only a few of them. So the total parameters (everything the model has learned) are far more than the active parameters (the part used for each token), which keeps inference cheaper. The idea goes back to a 1991 paper by Jacobs, Jordan, Nowlan and Hinton. Mistral's Mixtral 8x7B (December 2023) made it popular in open models: it has 8 experts and uses 2 per token. On 5 November 2026 Thinking Machines Lab launched Inkling 2 Small, an MoE model with 594 billion total and 17 billion active parameters. It said the weights will follow under an Apache 2.0 licence after safety testing. Compare models on AI models and their costs on LLM API prices.
Mixture of Experts kya hai?
Ye ek bada AI model hai jismein bahut saare chhote "experts" hote hain. Har shabd ke liye sirf kuch experts kaam karte hain. Isliye model bada hote hue bhi tez aur sasta chalta hai. Jaise Inkling 2 Small: 594B parameters hain, par har shabd par sirf 17B kaam karte hain.
