What is Fear & Greed Index?

Fear & Greed Index: a crypto term, explained in plain English.

In one line

A daily score from 0 to 100 that estimates the crypto market’s mood: low means fear, high means greed.

In simple words

Imagine a mood meter for a classroom. When everyone is scared before an exam, the needle points left. When everyone is excited before a holiday, it points right.

The Fear & Greed Index is a mood meter for crypto.

The technical side

The best-known crypto version, from Alternative.me, combines price volatility, market momentum and volume, social media activity, bitcoin dominance and search trends into one number. 0 to 24 is extreme fear, 75 to 100 extreme greed.

Some traders read extreme fear as a time to buy and extreme greed as a warning, but the index measures mood, not value. See today’s reading on our Fear & Greed page.
