What is Altcoin Season?

Altcoin Season: a crypto term, explained in plain English.

In one line

A stretch when most other cryptocurrencies (altcoins) rise faster than bitcoin. Indexes measure it over the last 90 days.

In simple words

Imagine a race where the big runner, bitcoin, usually wins. Some weeks, most of the smaller runners overtake him.

Those weeks are called altcoin season.

The technical side

An altcoin is any cryptocurrency other than bitcoin. The Altcoin Season Index checks how many of the top 100 coins, leaving out stablecoins and wrapped tokens, did better than bitcoin over 90 days; 75 or more out of 100 is usually called altcoin season, 25 or fewer bitcoin season.
