In simple words
Imagine a tap that fills a bucket with sweets. Every four years, someone turns the tap so only half as many sweets come out.
The bucket still fills, just more slowly. That is the Bitcoin halving.
The technical side
Bitcoin’s code halves the block subsidy every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years. It started at 50 BTC per block in 2009; the April 2024 halving cut it from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC, and the next is expected in 2028. Because of these cuts, the total supply can never pass 21 million BTC.
Halvings reduce new supply and miners’ income from new coins. Past halvings were followed by large price moves, but past patterns do not guarantee future ones.
