What is Generative AI?

Generative AI: an AI term, explained in plain English.

In one line

AI that creates new content, such as text, images, music, code or video, instead of only sorting or predicting things.

In simple words

Some machines can tell a cat photo from a dog photo. A generative AI can draw a brand-new cat that never existed.

It makes new things.

The technical side

Generative AI covers models that produce new data: language models for text and code, diffusion models for images and video, and audio models for speech and music. ChatGPT’s launch on 30 November 2022 made it mainstream.

Its output can be wrong (hallucination) or close to its training data, which raises questions of accuracy, copyright and disclosure. Follow the industry on our AI Hub.
