Qubic restarts chain and opens claims after $1.4m QU token hack
The layer-1 network resumed processing after validators backed a recovery plan, with 1,404 wallets affected by a predictable seed flaw able to claim until 1 May 2027.
Why it matters: The incident shows how a weak random-number generator in wallet software can expose thousands of accounts and force a live blockchain to halt.
Key points
- Roughly $1.4m in QU tokens was drained from 1,404 accounts through predictable wallet seeds
- Validators, known as Computors, approved the recovery plan and a claims platform is now open
- Qubic says wallets made with its web wallet before version 4.26.4 should be treated as insecure
Qubic has restarted its blockchain and opened a recovery process after a wallet seed vulnerability let an attacker drain about $1.4m in QU tokens from 1,404 accounts, Cointelegraph reports. The project's explorer shows the network processing ticks again from 8:00 pm on 19 Oct, past tick 85,371,949 where it had been halted on the Sunday.
Qubic said its validators, called Computors, approved the recovery plan, and affected holders can check their address and file a claim through a reclaim platform. Claims stay open until 1 May 2027. The chain was stopped to stop stolen funds moving further.
The flaw lay in wallet seeds produced by Qubic's web wallet on some Apple devices and browsers, where an insecure random-number generator could create predictable seeds. Qubic said on the Sunday that it had fixed seed generation in the latest web wallet release.
What to watch: Affected wallet holders have until 1 May 2027 to submit claims through Qubic's reclaim platform.
